Blowing Across the Wet - FluteTips 184
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 місяці тому
What does it mean to blow across the wet? Well, I know it seems like a funny expression. But to get the kind of tone that you want, you need to let the air hit the inside of your lower lip. It may even blow across the inside of the upper lip. When you do this right, the air feels cold because of the warm air hitting the wet of your lips. It's a way for you to loosen up your embouchure while giv...

Losing Your Tone While Performing - FluteTips 183

Have you ever been performing a piece only to find that your tone gets worse as you go along? I remember discovering this in college. Rather than relaxing, you get tighter with each measure. But a bigger part of the tens...

Arm Placement for Better Tone - FluteTips 180

How to NOT Go Flat at the End of Notes - FluteTips 168
Great video. Interested in learning difference between gold and silver risers.
Interesting, I guess I haven’t done a video on specifically that. There is quite a difference but at that point it is preference not good or bad.
Did you have a song that you create by yourself. pls share with me. I would like to hear it. tq
Hi! The piece that I was playing is the 3rd movement from Ferroud’s 3 Pieces, free on IMSLP.
I love your videos! Thanks so much for all your brilliant advice! ❤
You are so welcome! I am glad this helps you.
As an older player 55+ with fingers that are just not so nimble, leaving the right and left ring finger holes plugged works well for me. I cannot find a pre-professional c foot closed hole with ordering one from Japan or London so I make do.
I totally understand! You have to do what is best for your hands. Good luck!
Reichert are the best... on a good day when I have time I'll play through all of the exercises. Good for piccolo as well...
I love playing all the way through but it is work. Yes, playing on picc is fantastic.
Thanks for the video. The term isn’t walled but should be wall. A heavy or thin wall headjoint. Gold should also give a flute more body to the sound. I don’t think you’re going to get much difference in a gold lip plate. By examining the way sound is produced at the strike edge gold may not really make much difference. It’s hard to tell much difference in a video. I’ve had a gold embouchure plate applied and the tone wasn’t much different as I was hoping. Yes the riser would make more difference as opposed to the lip plate. A player should weigh the benefits carefully on parts because of huge price.
Have you tried different flutes with a gold lip plate or silver? I think you would hear the difference. I’m not sciencey but I hear the difference with or without the entire lip plate gold. But are you trying to say that only where the air would be split needs to be gold in order to make a difference? I could buy that argument.
Hii, i see lot of ur video, i really want to learn that thing, but in my country no one sells, those who have buy it from aboard, they have understanding about digital banking and how to buy online worldwide, but im not.. if u have cheap and old piccolo or flute that not u used again please send to me, i really love to learn... Thanks mom, sorry my english so broke... Pleaseeeeeeee
Next time it might be a good idea to play them first without disclosing anything about the maker or the materials. The. blindfold test precludes any assumptions and biases. That being said I think you clearly sounded best on the second Song headjoint. Your sound and articulation was most reliable on it, and it was nice. strong sound.
I love your videos Angela, I'm just beginning with the flute and they are helping me a lot <3 <3
You're so welcome! Fantastic and my pleasure!

I think my tight embouchure came from years of playing tense in nervous stage situations and practicing stressed about upcoming performances.
Maybe, it you can still correct it but it might take some concentrated effort.
Yesss! Slow gets you faster, faster :) I absolutely agree. It's a trick I've been using for years.
We are in the same club!
does it have the same fingerings as a normal flute?
Absolutely!
"I'm sure you can get it from your local store...." Well they are prohibitly expensive, even altos.
Too true, save your pennys.
Wow... you're so good Dr flute ❤
Awe thanks!
Yeow. I am a classically-trained flutist but I decided not to pursue a professional career. In 1974 (on the recommendation of my teacher at college) I upgraded from my student model to a slightly-used 1970 Armstrong Heritage C-foot, at the time a top-of-the-line instrument, for all of $550. It has some tuning quirks, but I know them so well after all these years that I automatically adjust on those notes. It's a thin-walled model and was pronounced "a real honker" by my repair technician (also a flutist). It's certainly a very good instrument for an amateur like me, and hopefully I won't ever have to replace it and suffer the sticker shock of today's prices!
Wow that sounds like you got a great instrument. Yes, that sticker shock!!!!!!
Hello ,can you help me,sometimes i feel that my embouchure and also my flute become easy in position and very unstable, lost. Even if I support it with my body. And if I want to sing a scale, the sound is very lost, very 'dull'. What could I do?And also has no weight when is happens
Are you talking about posture and how you hold the flute? It sounds like the flute is out of balance. I have some videos on proper playing positions one being the 4 balance points. Watch that and see if it answers your questions.
That was amazing. First, let me say i was intrigued that you even made this video...not the usual fodder for "learn to play the flute videos". So...years ago I had a Haynes, drawn, custom head joint. A big bright sound. One day someone gave me this old unplayable flute they had lying around that they didnt want. It is a Sealos, hand built, soldered.. I was intrigued by the low serial number, 118, and the fact that it wasn't built in a factory. I think my Haynes was number 37 thousand and something, or was it 137 thousand? I had the Sealos re-padded, started playing it..and wow. WOW! I sold that Haynes and forgot about it...until now. I had never thought about this until I heard you play. Bright vs Dark tone...maybe the flute you choose reflects your spirit...Love my dark Sealos flute!
Great story! I’ve never heard of a Sealos flute., very intriguing. I’m so glad you found the perfect instrument and right under your nose!
Tension is a right pest :) Gaagh.
It is!
I recently upgraded from my Azumi AZ3 to the Miyazawa 602 which is 958 silver with plated keys, and I chose a 14k riser and it is magnificent. The denser silver gives a rich warm sound and the gold riser makes the articulation so crisp and defined.
Oolala! I would probably love that flute too! It sounds luscious.
Thanks. I hadn't thought about trying that. :)
It can be a real game changer! Let me know how it goes.
Does it matter if you have a beginner flute going into high school? Because everyone else has an intermediate one.
It shouldn’t matter that much. You will get a sweeter tone on an intermediate flute but if you work hard your tone can still be pretty good and maybe even better then the other students. But, start saving your pennies to upgrade as you will be happy you did.
I'm a biginer and all of these tips are quite important to me, l know I'm going to get some progress soon
Great, I love talking to beginners. Keep me posted on your progress.
Thats a alto flute i think
No, it is most definitely a bass flute. Listen to my video on meet the alto and you’ll hear the difference.
Thanks for sharing. In my dreams, I would have an instrument to match either of those. I'm liking the tone of the gold. I had an old Haynes ripped off and I'm shopping. I'm a novice, so no I don't NEED the gold. If I can't find anything local I like here in San Diego, I'll look towards the NY vendor you mentioned. Both are beautiful. I probably would never leave the house if I mortgaged the house and grabbed the gold.
Ha! Gold is great if you have the money but entirely not necessary. You can find a perfect flute for you that is silver and maybe with a gold riser. Keep looking and trying flute. Happy Hunting!
Yes loved that tip. I still find intonation challenging. It’s pretty nerve racking at times on exposed parts. I’m going to try the appeggios. Ty
You got this! On piccolo tuning is never going to be easy but learning what your piccolo can do is beneficial and the arpeggios will help.
I am a complete novice. I bought a Tocco Plus composite flute which is very lightweight. I have been struggling getting the balance. Thank you for your explanation of this.
Glad it was helpful! How is tone production going?
THANKKK YOUUU I tried as my band teacher told me to work on my tone as it sounds airy and because of this i sound better and my higher octave doesn't sound too forced however I do still hear a bit of airyness but ill figure it out
Fantastic! To get that airiness out open more. More space between the lips and teeth will take out that air.
Yey! I've been trying to work hard on double tonguing recently and came to all those exact same conclusions through experimentation, so it's great to hear someone else articulating it in a slightly different way. I had a chuckle at the chicken pecking description - yup! I get it! I do find it so hard not to default back to old ways even after discovering better ways of doing things.
Glad it was helpful! I am so happy to help. We all revert back to old habits from time to time. Just keep listening to yourself and you will keep doing it correctly.
I have so much to learn! 😂
Life long learner!
Wow...Ive never thought about this before...yes, my "ka" is hitting the roof of my mouth in the middle/back. Move everything forward...okay Ill try this...
Keep me posted!
A great channel with excellent lessons.
Thank you so much!
Great tip, I always found triple tonging easier for some reason I dont know if it was the rhythm but it just came to me more naturally. great video 2x👍
True! Thank you!
Wonderful explanation as usual! Sometimes, the "bad sound" comes also from the lack of synchronisation with fingers... For me this is almost the most difficult part. What would you advise to train efficiently on tonguing/fingers synchronisation?
Yes, synchronization is a problem as well. That is almost always because the fingers are rushing. The tongue is usually slightly behind. The only help is to start slower with a metronome and work it up to the tempo you want. This way you teach the fingers not to rush.
Have you ever seen that Gary Larson cartoon where the guy is yelling at his dog, "Bad dog Ginger! Bad dog Ginger"! And what the dog hears is "Blah blah Ginger! Blah blah Ginger!"? That was me when my teacher used to say that word "embouchure". Maybe I was so happy just to be hitting the note, and I didn't want to jinx it by talking about it. Go figure...Watching your video I am reminded to get out my tuner and practice long tones. And to take the time to tell myself to relax...Im really glad that i have finally realized how important embouchure studies are...but that's another story. I would be interested in your making a video on your own practice. For example, if you were going to have a flute work day, what would your schedule be like? Also some details, like what you pay attention to when doing harmonics, intervals, etc. Hooray Faure'! Thank you ~°~
I think I have some students who probably are Ginger as well! I do remember that Farside! I love the suggestion for videos. Maybe a day in the flute? Great idea.
You make a wrong note sometimes . A b flat instead b in the first bar …….
Alas, to err is human….
I seem to get a better sound on the right side but it is very tiring to hold my flute the right side. Almost impossible! Your arms also ends up being in an awkward position. So what do you do?
Do you mean the lip plate is moved to the right? Is it necessary? Have you looked in the mirror to see is that where your embouchure whole is? If so, you shouldn’t have to hold it awkwardly. Are you pushing the right arm out too much?
I hope it isn’t too late to comment, but I’ve been trying to learn double tonguing recently. My “da-ga” has been better than my “ta-ka”. I believe it’s for the reason that I can’t get my ka as strong sounding as my ta, and I can’t prevent my embouchure from loosening the higher the notes I play, creating a sloppy noise. This only happens when playing high notes with my ka, not ta. Any suggestions or advice?
The question I have is do you think that you have too much air moving with your ga or ka? Try having more pressure from support and don’t use that air. Keep the pressure and see what happens.
I am in highschool and still don't have my scales down.. Better late than never ! I have been doing reichert n1 with metronome to make sure everything is in place. What else should I do ? Do you have any advice ? How should I practice any methods?
You are on the right track. I would also add Reichert n2 for arpeggios. Next is etudes. Do you practice those? You can download some from my website. I would start with Anderson op. 41. A steady diet of these will show marked improvement.
Hello, I just discovered your channel. I started playing the the 4th grade but had no private lessons. Our band teacher was a saxophone player and when he played flute he had a very pulled back embouchure. My question is I have very large teeth and a prominent overbite (even with orthodontia work). When I try to create space, it is not a finger width as my teeth are too large. Do you have any advice for opening my sound? I do have an intermediate flute which made a world of difference with the sound, but it doesn't sound as full as I would like. i was in marching band in the late 80's early 90's but haven't played regularly since. I have just recently retired and have picked up practicing my flute. I wasn't a great musician, but could play in a pinch for a church service to accompany the choir but my tone was very thin. I try hard to remember to open up and be relaxed, but sometimes I am very flat tune-wise to the piano or organ (whichever the accompanist is playing for the song).Your videos and advice have helped me greatly now that I am finding time to practice my flute again. But any advice you can give would be appreciated.
Kudos to you for getting back to the flute! I’m not sure exactly what to do but since every embouchure is different, I would just listen to your tone and experiment with opening, moving up on lip and relaxing the embouchure. When you hear a good tone that is the right place for you. It doesn’t have to look exactly like mine. It is great that you are trying to get the sound. Keep it up, you’ll find it.
Bro not joking this is my music teacher dr mcbrearty hi it's jonas
Hi Jonas!
Thanks so much for this tutorial. It helped me a lot.
You're welcome! I am so glad!
Your videos have been so helpful to me various times, the most recent being to blow across the wet. So helpful! I am 76 years old, only taking up the flute 3 1/2 years ago. I love playing this instrument! My background- I am a professional pianist with advanced degrees in piano. I also have classical vocal training. No experience whatsoever with any wind instrument. My flute teacher is good, but sometimes I think that she doesn’t know what to do with me because of my other knowledge and experiences. For now, I consider myself an intermediate in flute playing. Your videos and explanations are so helpful!
Wow! So happy that you have found flute. I understand that sometimes with adult students a teacher can flounder because they don’t know exactly where you are coming from. Maybe if you explained your goals to her it might help?
You have such a unique tone! Your vibrato is so rich and it sounds great :)
Thank you so much! That is a nice compliment.
I'm a long way from this but this is fascinating!
Thanks! Long tones are good anytime.
Aha! What a great way to explain to students. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I really hope these help students.
Your my music teacher it liam
Hi Liam!😀
I'm actually using these embouchure tips for primitive bamboo flute.
Fantastic! Very cool!
Wow! Thanks, just heading in to play! 🙂🙏🏼❤⭐🌺 Happy Mothers Day ! ⭐
Thanks!
It appears you are blocking comments. Please allow. Only if we can agree on what "fast air" is. I have no idea what you are referring to as "fast air" if not the velocity of flow somewhere in the system, Such as through the lip aperture. Interesting that you wrote: "No it is not an embouchure problem." Then wrote: "But faster air connotes something different. One thinks about embouchure and control not relying on blowing harder" Quite contradictory.
I like the discourse. I still maintain it is not an embouchure problem but an air problem. Let’s perhaps say, if you will, that there is a mind set difference. Blowing harder is to overblow and play loud all the time. When you think faster air you won’t blow as hard. Yes there may be an embouchure change with that as well but let’s say I’ve already addressed this with a student.
